It’s the staple food in here…
To relive childhood memories this Raksha Bandhan weekend, we reached our birth place and my mum’s hometown located in Western Rajasthan. The sun’s so bright in this place throughout the year and that’s why it’s called Sun City also known as Jodhpur. Just like any other city in this desert state, it’s also known for its forts and palaces.
Besides these historical monuments, we often relate to a place with its food connect and of course, I and my cousins drool over ‘nani ke haath ka khana’, but our earlier breakfast memories are of deep fried onion kachoris and mirchi badas followed by several rounds of masala chai. No continental or Mexican delicacy can beat this local delight often served with two slices of bread.
The masala of these balls of treasure is so tangy and satisfying that people usually eat two-three pieces at one go. For us, it’s the first thing we eat followed by nani ke haath ki ‘Gatte ki Sabzi’ ( made out of gram flour) and ‘Gud ka Choorma’ (a Rajasthani sweet).
The best place to buy these mirchi badas and pyaaz ki kachori is ‘Surya Namkeen’ located at Jalori Gate. It’s a little filthy place, but the taste remains the same and so the quality. In fact, the samosas of this shop are so crunchy filled with potato masala, which has nuts in it. Also you can always spot locals savouring these fried balls at every nook and corner of the city. Apart from these spicy balls of fire, the meal always conclude with a portion of ‘Mawa Kachori’ with lots of sugar syrup on it.
